Carla's Heliconia Garden
Heliconias
Heliconia lennartiana (orange) subgenus Heliconia section Heliconia native to: Panama endemic: Panama BACK TO TOP
Nice colors. Good bloomer, and nice cut flowers. The plant looks great. However, this one began to decline soon after the photo was taken. I have divided it; lennartiana might be one of the species which needs frequent renewal.BACK TO TOP

accession number: 2001-08-01-0003 location: Given to me by a friend who got it at the Sunday market in El Valle, Cocle, Panama. It is native to the area. The opportunity of selling it at the market has severely reduced its numbers in the wild; I suspect that it is either extinct in its native habitat or soon will be. elevation: 850 meters climate: Atlantic slope; no distinct dry season. Cool due to elevation and seasonal wind and cloud. soil type: loamy shade percent: 75 % habitat notes: the plant was growing under a high canopy and in rather dense understory common at this location: not anymore associated species: H. necrobracteata, reticulata, 3 species of Chamandorea, many Cyclanthaceae BACK TO TOP
date planted: August 2001 where planted: sector 1 center first flowering: 2002 comment: Dividing the clumps while they are still strong, as in the photos, has been a good tactic for me to keep them from declining precipitously. BACK TO TOP
