comment: One expert calls this vaginalis in spite of the zingiberoid leaves. This is the same as the vaginalis from nearby Gatun.

It looks like a vaginalis here.





But the vegetation doen't fit in the tidy category of cannoid.

color notes: Thin red border on leaves; some reticulation.

form: erect

bract color: red
rachis: red; yellow on younger rachis
number of bracts: 6 - 8
flower color: yellow; green distally, almost black at tip.
flower form: straight
ovary: yellow with green/black tip
comment: Peduncle red to 10 cm below first bract.

ACCESSION DATA

location: Panama, Colon province, Lagartarita near Lago Gatun
elevation: 46 meters
climate: Atlantic, but with some dry season.
soil type: Loamy, but periodically inundated along stream margin.
shade percent: 75 %
habitat notes: In stream margin surrounded by pasture.
associated species: Few other heliconias in the area. It has been under cultivation for a very long time, I imagine.
